Ever listen to Blues Traveler? I used to listen to Blues Traveler back in the day – there’s only a few songs of theirs that stuck with me, but one of them is “Just Wait” – and the line that always jumped out for me, even back then, was “there’s no such thing as a failure who keeps trying.” It made so much sense back then in my early 20’s or whatever, and it still resonates with me 25-ish years later as I’m in my late 40’s…dare I say it, pushing 50? But it’s such a simple thought, and it’s so true. Just don’t give up. Just keep at it. I think that the reason so many people fail is because they just plain give up. Like in real estate, for example – I think 80% of agents are out of business within 5 years. I think that new restaurants and new REALTORs have a very similar failure rate, but for restaurants, I can give them a pass – because their costs are so high. If you’re running a restaurant, you’re almost for sure going to have employees, a big expensive lease, and you’ll have to buy food pretty much every day regardless of whether you have any customers or not. Realtors, though? Pretty low fixed overhead costs for most of them – so even if you need to go back to work, can you not be a part time REALTOR on evenings and weekends? You can, but you choose not to, for whatever reason – but you make a choice to fail. You choose to give up. In most cases. Not always, obviously – sometimes that choice is more or less made for you by circumstances – but even if life hands you lemons (circumstance), you can still make lemonade (choice leading to success, instead of failure and a rotted bag of lemons). I recorded this video just before I opened the doors for an open house on a listing I have that I’ve had for several months, and hasn’t sold – we’ve had offers, but we couldn’t put them together. It’s late in the season, we have a “high days on market” – but I’m still out here, holding the home open, signifying my commitment and intention to the world: I’m getting this sold. One way or another, by hook or by crook, I’ll keep at it. Unless I get fired, in which case, I’ll continue to grind away on my other listings, and get THEM sold. It’s what I do. I succeed. Eventually.
