When it comes to who Americans will, or will not, vote for President, some folks have a litmus test. For many Americans, that litmus test is, “Do you oppose abortion in all its forms?” Many Americans will vote for whoever answers “yes” to that question, and will never vote for anyone who is equivocal about it. Trump, despite his past support for abortion rights, now claims to be staunchly opposed. It’s a calculated and canny move because he wants to lock up the 25% of the Republican Party made up of evangelicals for whom this is their non-negotiable litmus test. They don’t care of Trump is insincere in his opposition to abortion, just so long as he stacks the judiciary with folks who will contribute to eventually overturning Roe vs. Wade. But I have another litmus test: you cannot be an overt racist and still be worthy of the presidency. Racism is not a black or white issue, it’s not like everyone is, or is not, racist. Racism, like autism, is a spectrum, and everyone is on the spectrum which goes from “hardly barely ever at all racist” to full on Nazi white supremacist racist calling for genocide against non-whites, arming themselves, and actually carrying out mass murder, like this guy in El Paso, Texas the other day. When Trump announced his candidacy, his very first speech in Trump Tower had an overtly racist message. It wasn’t a dog whistle. It was clear and overt, saying of Mexicans: “They’re rapists.” Sure, he also said “Some, I assume, are good people” – really? He has to assume that some are good people, because he doesn’t actually know any Mexicans that are good people? Whatever. My point is, that Trump is clearly an overt racist – OK he hasn’t said “Sieg Heil” and done the Nazi salute or attended a cross burning that I know of, but to be a clearly identified racist, you don’t need to reach that extreme. What he’s done is extreme and clear enough such that I personally feel he is disqualified from being President. And what I don’t get is why more Americans don’t have that as THEIR litmus test. Just how racist does somebody have to be before even Evangelicals will renounce him? What is the content of YOUR character, that you can condone, support, and even vote for someone who is so clearly a racist? I don’t get it. It makes me sick, literally.
