I’m blessed to have had a life where most of the people that surround me are good folk – they keep their word and are honest and truthful. Over the past year or two, it seems though like I’ve been running across more and more people who don’t share my same dedication to trustworthiness and integrity. And I’ve run into some trouble with it, because I tend to trust people until they prove themselves to be untrustworthy – to my detriment. I am beginning to get an appreciation for why some people are just not very trusting. Most likely, they’ve just been screwed over that much more than I have. But what happened to the good old days, when a man’s word was his bond, a handshake was as good as a written contract, or even better. How do we get back to those days, if people like me don’t continue to do business that way? It seems that we are slipping from a high-trust to a low-trust society, and a lot is being lost in the way. We are all the poorer for it.
