We went to Sunday mass today – which is something we do only a handful of times per year. I was struck by this week’s homily – which is that it’s not enough for us just not to do evil. Yes, obviously, nobody should be doing evil. But so many people just stand by and let evil happen. They don’t want to get involved, they don’t take a stand, they don’t put a stop to evil when they see it. What we should really all be doing, if we want to follow Christ’s example, is to actually do good. Take action. Do something to make the world a better place. Help people who are sick. Feed people who are hungry. Help immigrant children locked in cages at the border. Whatever it may be, if we want to make this world a better place, it’s going to require more than just channel surfing and eating bon-bons. So this holiday season, do yourself a favor, and do something good. Put some money in that Salvation Army pot outside the supermarket. Volunteer at a food bank. Correct someone who’s acting with bad intent. Ask yourself, What would Jesus do in this situation – then do that. Happy Holidays!
