Remember all the hubbub about “Oscars So White” and all that a couple-few years back? It’s happening again, I guess – this year I guess a lot of best actor / best picture nominees have a bunch of white males up for the award and whatnot – and that’s too bad. I mean it’s fine, because I am sure they are good actors and actresses and directors and whatnot and deserve the accolades. But it’s also sad, because there’s so much awesome content being put out these days that have non-white heroes and heroines, and they tell stories that really are richer, more emotionally fraught, more intellectually simulating and sociologically challenging that they are, in many cases, just better products than the white-bread stuff getting Oscar nods. A lot of this awesome content isn’t cinema – it’s streaming. Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video – they’re putting out great stuff with diverse casts and it offers a lot of very compelling content. I think it’s clear to most anyone who watches these streaming services, as I had a chance to do over the winter break, that there’s tremendous value in these stories being told by these writers, actors, and directors. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before “mainstream” cinema is more in-line with what we’re seeing from the streamers, and I can’t wait!
