These are heavy times, although I would hardly know it looking out my window or across the sand at the shimmering Monterey Bay. It’s almost alike all of that couldn’t be further away from my day-to-day reality, because I am privileged. If you’ve happened to see the news lately though, you’ll notice that America is literally in flames right now, sparked by a series of “video taped” outrages against African American citizens, but culminated by the murder in broad daylight of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer sworn to protect and serve, while his 3 other comrades looked on and did nothing. It’s disgusting, nauseating, outrageous – and depressing. Depressing even more so because this kind of thing has been going on for hundreds of years in the USA, and “progress” has been so halting and slow. I think almost everyone agrees that this is unacceptable – but why do we accept it? Partially I think it’s because it has been so invisible to most people, filtered as it was through mass media…but now the filter has been removed, and it’s plain for all to see the kinds of horror that African Americans live with, and have lived with, for centuries. It’s systemic. And apologists will say it’s not systemic, because the law say of course that’s murder. But if it’s not systemic, why is the system protecting the 3 other cops who just watched their colleague murder George Floyd? It’s plain to see the racism is systemic – you could see it the case of Ahmaud Aubrey, how it took weeks before charges were filed, the way Amy Cooper weaponized the police against Christian Cooper in central park, and how these 3 other cops remain free. Do you see? It’s bad. It’s as bad as they say. We have got to do better. The soul of America is at stake. You know what needs to happen. Do your part.
