How Many Lives Saved Makes Quarantine Worth It? | COVID-19 Effects
Take the Poll! https://sebfrey.tv/2020/04/05/how-many-lives-saved-makes-quarantine-worth-it/
It’s a rainy Sunday, and like most everyone else for miles around, I’m busy sheltering in place, surfing the ‘net. I’ve been consuming a lot of social media about this whole coronavirus thing, and I’ve been struck by how many people, particularly those on the right side of the political spectrum, are saying that the damage being done to the economy by having us all shelter in place like this just isn’t worth it. That makes me wonder: at what point would it be worth it?
Let’s say we have 330 million people in the United States. If half of them would die without shelter in place – 165,000,000 dead – but by sheltering in place we brought that number down to 100,000 – would that be worth it? I’m guessing a lot of people would say yes, for sure. Maybe just about everybody. Now let’s say we’re only saving 100,000 lives by sheltering in place. A lot of voices are saying well, those people who are dying, they’re mostly old, and/or sick, and they wouldn’t have long to live anyway. Of course, not all of them are that old, and not all of them are that sick, and many of them might otherwise have gone on to live for decades, but I digress.
So I’m going to put a poll up on SebFrey.TV and I’m going to ask you to let me know how many saved lives would make this whole shelter-in-place / economic disaster worth while for you. I’m expecting that everyone who’s pro-life and swears up and down that every life is sacred would agree that if we save even ONE LIFE, that $10 trillion is not too high a price to pay. So please weigh in here, visit this page on my web site and let me know your opinion:
